Single Parent

New Parent

  1. Tell me why you wanted to become a parent? Or was it a choice?
  2. What were some “Horror Stories” other parents told you? Were they true?
  3. What was your greatest fear about becoming a parent?
  4. Was it ever realized?
  5. Do you have any secrets for Potty Training Reluctant Toddlers?
  6. Do you have any secrets for Dealing with Tantrums?
  7. How did you conquer your fear?

Step Parent

  1. Tell me what sets being a Step parent apart from other parents?
  2. Tell me about your Blended Family? Are there “YOURS, MINE and OURS?”
  3. What are the ages of your step kids?
  4. What did you hear about being a Step Parent that you were determined not to let happen?
  5. Tell me about the first opportunity you had to “be the Parent” on your own.
  6. How did that impact your next opportunity?
  7. How do you and your spouse divide the parenting?
  8. Now that you have been through it, what would you differently, if you could do it again?
  9. If you had to describe your parenting style, what would you say? How does that differ from your Spouse’s?
  10. Describe your relationship with your Step kids.
  11. Has being a Step Parent changed or impacted your relationship with your spouse?
  12. How has YOUR life changed since you became a Step parent?
  13. What has been your greatest challenge?

Adoptive Parent

  1. Tell me what sets being an Adoptive parent apart from other parents?
  2. Tell me about your Family? Do you have natural children as well?
  3. Did you adopt locally? Nationally? Or Internationally?
  4. At what age did you adopt your child?
  5. What did you hear about being an Adoptive Parent that you were determined not to let happen?
  6. What were the circumstances around your decision to adopt?
  7. What were the circumstances around your child’s being placed for adoption?
  8. Was it an open adoption or a private adoption?
  9. How did you first tell your child they were adopted?
  10. How does that “story” compare with your other children’s “Day you were born” story?
  11. Now that you have been through it, what would you differently, if you could do it again?
  12. Describe your relationship with your Adopted child? Does this differ from any natural children?
  13. Has being an Adoptive Parent changed or impacted your relationship with your spouse/partner?
  14. How has YOUR life changed since you became a parent?
  15. What was your greatest challenge in the Adoption Process?
  16. How did you meet it?
  17. What has been your greatest Joy or Pride?
  18. What advice would you give to anyone who is considering Adopting a child?

Teen Parent

(Most of these will be Adults who became parents in their teens, and have lessons learned and perspective, however, I see great value in having a few parents who are still very young providing – day in the life – perspective)

  2. Tell me about your Family? Do they support your decision to keep your baby?
  3. Did you ever consider terminating or adoption?
  4. How did you arrive at the decision you made?
  5. What did you hear about being an Teen Parent that you were determined not to let happen?
  6. How did you first tell your parent you were pregnant?
  7. How did that impact your relationship with your parents?
  8. How about the father? Is/was he present? Are/were his parents?
  9. Now that you have been through it, what would you differently, if you could do it again?
  10. Describe your relationship with your child?
  11. Has being an Teen Parent changed or impacted your relationships with your friends, relatives, parents, siblings?
  12. How has YOUR life changed since you became a parent?
  13. What was your greatest challenge in the Process?
  14. How did you meet it?
  15. What has been your greatest Joy or Pride?
  16. What advice would you give to anyone who is considering keeping and raising their child as a teen parent?
  17. What has been your greatest resource as an teen parent?
  18. How do you think this decision will impact you or your child in the future?
  19. Where did you learn your parenting skills?
  20. Who is your parenting role model?                                          

 Extra questions for any topic:

  1. What would you say that you did that gave your child the ability to do what they are doing today?
  2. Did you know your child would become XXXXXX?
  3. What did you have to do differently for this child than you did for the siblings?
  4. How did you react when other Parents warned “Just Wait Til They Are Teenagers!”?  Would you repeat the same warning to other parents?
  5. Where did you learn your parenting skills or style?
  6. Who was your biggest role model as a parent?
  7. What did they do that you wanted to emulate?
  8. What skill would you say was the MOST important skill you used as a parent?
  9. Were you a Stay at Home/Work from Home parent or a Working outside the home Parent?
  10. If you were a Stay at Home Parent/Work From Home Parent how did you schedule your day?  What challenges did you face when your children were clingy, demanding, sick, or breastfeeding?
  11. What advice would you give to a parent in your situation?
  12. What resource was the most invaluable to you?
  13. What has been the greatest challenge you faced as a parent?
  14. What has been the reward for all your hard work?
  15. What would you change, if you had to relive this experience?
  16. What was it like, raising a child in XXXX environment? (Hollywood, Ghetto, Country, Constant Travel?)
  17. What vow did you make to yourself about raising your child?
  18. How did you overcome the obstacles that so many parent find insurmountable?
